about need less
Hi, I’m Danielle - climate advocate and sustainability blogger and educator
Two years ago I gave up my own successful business in the wedding industry. I had no idea what to do next, but I knew that I wanted to have a positive impact - on people, on the planet and make a difference somehow.
I needed to do something that aligned with who I am at my core but I was stalled by my own self doubt that I had enough knowledge and influence to be taken seriously.
Looking at my day to day life I could see that I was making decisions throughout my day, everyday, based on the environmental impact it would have. I was having conversations with my daughters, my partner, my friends and family about facts and stories related to the health of our planet that I had read about (or more likely had seen on TikTok or YouTube!) and discussing the actions I was taking and why, and tips on what they could do too. These were just casual practices of mine that felt aligned to who I am.
And yet, when thinking about how I could create an impact on a greater scale, there seemed to be some roadblocks for me:
I didn’t feel like I was educated enough talk about climate change or sustainable actions with people who were not my immediate circle.
I was worried that not having the language or exactly the right information would open me up to resistance and confrontation.
My actions aren’t perfect and I was afraid of being seen as a hypocrite.
Then, one day a conversation with a friend made me realise - these feelings aren’t unique to me. You probably feel like this too? Most of us do.
We admire activists and yet we can’t imagine ourselves as one of them.
Because we don’t feel we have the right information on the statistics and the history and the politics, available to reel off at any given moment. So we’d prefer to avoid the spotlight in fear of being pulled into these conversations.
Because we are fearful of being called out that we should be doing more than we are.
But here are the things that are ACTUALLY TRUE:
Everyday I make decisions based on what my impact will be on the earth and what I want my children to learn from me. I am already DOING something important.
I am motivated and optimistic that we are creating a more sustainable world, where more and more people are becoming informed and conscious of climate change and the influence that we humans have over our future.
And it is not blind optimism, it is optimism based on my real intentions, and the intentions that I know so many of us have to make a real difference. That includes you.
We don’t have to know everything about a subject in order to show that we care and do something important. And avoiding conversations that involve those parts we don’t yet understand puts distance between us and being part of a community of people who have similar goals and interests.
I know that we can do things in our everyday lives which don’t take much effort and yet create an impact, an influence and teach us things about the world we love and the person we want to be.
So that brought me here, to create need less.
A blog, a guide and a community for passionate people who want to do good, who want to make changes and inspire others to do the same.
For people who want to call themselves an environmentalist, a climate advocate, champion, activist, and KNOW that it is true.
You are, I will help you realise it just as I did for myself.
